Zentangling, Line Weight & Breaking the Picture Plane

Here is a small sampling of our zentangling unit
We chose animals that interested us and were very thoughtful about composition. Our goal was to create an exciting subject layout by breaking the picture plane. In non-artspeak, that means laying out your subject so it enters the paper and exits at points to create a great visual. Interestingly, our brains automatically provide the 'information' about the parts of the animals we cannot see.

Weaving demonstration....

So, we interrupt this zentangle lesson for a short video by a Founders artist...we recently got a BIG loom to work on during any free times we have, and well, we are kind of OBSESSED! One of the artists here, made a demo video to show us how its done! Take a look right here:

Hello School Year 2015-16! We have started out the year by creating our fresh new portfolios, and are making Zentangle sea creatures with our names to decorate them!
Zentangling is a calming and creative way of using line and different line weights in patterns to draw.
You can find out more about it here
or here
And find all kinds of patterns to practice here
Stay tuned, so far we are having an amazing year!

Here is a wonderful connection to our project based on Edvard Munch's famous paintings called "The Scream"

Check out this video below, plus their accompanying website.

Munch said: " I felt a huge unending scream course through Nature"

Can you create a work of art inspired by this? Take a photo, email or bring to school and we can post it here!

The Scream Interpreted....

Edvard Munch and interpretation....

We have been spending time looking at Edvard Munch's very famous piece that he called "The Scream'.  A few things we are observing is how he used the space to show things off in the distance, with perspective and use of tinting and scale. We have also spent much time pondering what on earth the screamer might be screaming about. Our response to this work will entail learning some oil pastel techniques and interpreting his work to make it our own. The artists will be charged with the creation of a self portrait in which they are screaming 'for' something, or because some sort of event is occurring....stay tuned!

Exploring a new tool...

We are exploring is the question of whether or not an artist can capture the essence of a particular subject, without rendering it in a realistic form. Here is a sneak peek at the beginnings of a lesson called "Picasso Dogs". Please take special notice of the fancy schmancy paintbrushes we are learning to use! These are  specially designed watercolor brushes by Pentel that carry water in the barrel handle. We have a fairly unanimous thumbs up that we love them...they are not the best for larger work, and some students have chosen to work with traditional brushes, but these are wonderful for smaller watercolors and details. I believe that exposure to the tools of art making is what truly helps a young artist learn to express themselves....its like learning a new language...the more vocabulary you have, well the better you can get your ideas out of your mind and imagination and onto the page!
